The Montessori Approach

Maria Montessori was clearly ahead of her time, and her core principles—that effective learning is self-directed and focuses on the development of the whole person—uniquely prepare your child for our fast-changing world.

Montessori education is designed to help your child maximize her potential. It provides an educational environment intentionally crafted to meet their unique developmental needs, with adults specifically trained to observe and connect them with exactly what they need at that moment to learn.

We Follow the Child

This begins with teachers trained in the specific developmental stages of the children they work with. By honoring where children are in their development, we can create educational environments that perfectly suit their needs. We understand that learning is not always linear, and each individual child will require different challenges and supports throughout their time at our school. Additionally, Montessori students have plenty of opportunities to deeply explore areas of personal interest.

Montessori Fosters Independence

In our schools, infants, toddlers, and young children learn that their independence is valued. We encourage free movement, choice within carefully crafted boundaries, and ensure they know their voices are heard. As children grow older, they begin to learn about time management. We teach them practical life skills, such as cleaning and preparing food, that can be used in the classroom, at home, and beyond. This emphasis on independence gives children a tremendous sense of empowerment.

Beautiful Classrooms Inspire Beautiful Work

When observing a Montessori classroom, one quickly notices the unique environment. We value natural materials and prefer natural lighting. Living things, such as plants and animals, are present, along with low shelves that allow children to easily access their work. There are spaces for children to work in groups or alone, whether on the floor or in a chair. The materials are of high quality, inspiring the children who use them to create beautiful work.

“I am extremely impressed with ASTEAM’s Montessori approach to education, which emphasizes independence, freedom within boundaries, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical, and social growth. Montessori education aligns with human nature, rather than opposing it. The classroom guides are compassionate, professional, and clearly passionate about teaching, fostering a love of learning in the children. Furthermore, the primary casa incorporates instructors and professionals for enrichment subjects such as science, music, and art. The administration is approachable, professional, and, most importantly, accessible and involved. I highly recommend this school and the Montessori method of learning..”

We Value Kindness and Peace

Our students are global citizens. World geography is taught starting at a young age, and children learn about traditions from a wide range of cultures. We take the time to teach skills like conflict resolution. We believe that peace and kindness are the foundation of any quality education, and this foundation is essential for the progress of humanity.

Nature is Integrated

In addition to the plants and animals that children help care for, our classrooms often have a museum-like quality. Depending on what the children are studying, one can find a variety of interesting specimens. Natural studies such as botany and zoology begin at the elementary level. We also believe it is essential to bring our students out into nature whenever possible, giving them the opportunity to learn and appreciate it firsthand.

We Value Formative Assessment

Evaluation is derived from a Latin word meaning “to sit close to.” In a Montessori classroom, that’s precisely what we do. Teachers sit close to children while they work, gathering information as they go. The three-period lesson, a Montessori hallmark, is specifically designed to assess understanding and mastery during teaching. Teachers also observe students and take notes, allowing them to target areas where students may need more challenge or support. Using formative assessments every day enables teaching and learning to be adjusted in the moment, ensuring each child receives exactly what they need.

But What Precisely is Montessori Instruction?

At its core, it is a way of being with children that allows each child to fully develop into the person they are meant to be. Just as you make every effort to ensure your home is loving and secure—so your child feels safe and well-adjusted—we work diligently to ensure the physical environment, the teachers, and the student community meet your child’s needs with respect and support at every step of their educational journey.
